Devon county championships 2012 is just finished at St Enedoc. The course is in top condition. The only improvement needed is trimming the hedge in front of the clubhouse. We park beside a brand new Aston Martin DB9 – like a hunting predator in steel – the most spectacular thing during the day. In the bar at Trevose we here “St Enedoc is like Trevose on steroids” – which turns out to be true. First hole stretches towards the sea with a stunning view – but it is easy to be seduced.

Second hole is really a good one, can get even the best to tumble. Then our spirit goes down until we reach no. 6 – with the worlds largest bunker, you really need to hit over it – magnificent! Eight is a short and lovely oneshotter with numerous guarding potbunkers – a soft shot is needed. Then someone turns on the light – ten to fifteen are of different character – good but not links. Suddenly we approach greens with backspin and are able to attack flags with lofted clubs. MrJ 5/4

15th is a crescendo when we attack for an ace and fourputs in anger. Our god of links finally get to rest at 16th to 18th. Sixteen is a master par5 that runs along the sea, one of the best holes on the course. 17th, par3 so long that the ladies in front of us play it like a par4. At 18 we tee off from backtee, orders from Marshall, a finish worthy any championship. The DB9 is still there when we leave – which makes us happy again.
