We peer into a black and white screen, just like Swedish television 1973, before we drive over the 1st hole’s marker post at Tenby Golf Club. The 3rd is an amazingly difficult par 4 that demands inbred knowledge of how to play an approach to a green with steep slopes on both sides. The 4th- The Bell – has two markers, with a deep hollow between them. To reach the green you must hit a high shot over the last marker on one of Tenby’s innumerable Burrows. We dare to go for the flag and are rewarded with a chime right in the middle of the bell. At the 5th green we reach a links plaza – the 5th, 10th and 13th green; the 6th, 11th and 14th tee – a wonderful meeting place for the content at Tenby. The local train trundles by and sounds a salute. The path behind the 8th ends with a marvellous view over the beach, and Tenby on the cliffs above.

The 9th is a classic links hole where the brave are truly rewarded. The 10th and 11th run parallel – both are tough par 4s with a lot of links feel to them. The 12th is a wonderful par 3 where the course’s soul gathers. Mr J wins 8 and 6.

After the 14th we meet a lost hippie, whose gaze resembles that of someone who has spent many lost hours staring at the TV screen we saw next to the 1st tee. Suddenly we are just as lost. Where has the links gone? After a terror-filled experience in three holes, to our great pleasure, we play links again on the 18th towards the last hidden green.
