Royal Birkdale
Anticipated Links Experience:
Championship links. Everything from the shop, to the bar, to the putting is perfect. The course meanders through high sand dunes. The holes are separated and distinct. Tough, faultless layout. It’s like a smorgasboard with wines complementing every dish at a top-class restaurant – excellent!!
Best holes:
par3: 7th hole
par4: 1st hole
par5: 17th hole
Worthy of Note:
Sophie Gustafson won the 2000 Women’s British Open at Royal Birkdale.
History:
The club was founded as Birkdale Golf Club in 1889, earning its royal status in 1951. Three generations of the Hawtree family have been responsible for the course’s design. Frederick G Hawtree and J H Taylor are responsible for how the course looks today. Frederick’s son, Frederick W Hawtree made a number of improvements in the 1960s. In 1993 Martin Hawtree, son of Frederick W, made a number of modernisations, among others a complete rebuild of all 18 greens.
Royal Birkdale regularly hosts The British Open, for both men and women. During the 1960s two Ryder Cup tournaments were held here, and apart from these many important tournaments have been hosted, such as the Walker Cup, the British Amateur, and the Curtis Cup.
