History:
Hoylake is England’s second oldest links course, founded in 1869. The club has a history filled with great events from the world of golf, particularly on the amateur side. During its first seven years the golfcourse was good friends with a horse-racing track. The first British Amateur was held here in 1885 and since then many important tournaments have been played here, including several British Opens. Two of the greatest amateur golfers from the turn of the 20th century were members at Royal Liverpool, John Ball and Harold Hilton. John Ball won the British Amateur eight times and the British Open in 1890, becoming the first Englishman as well as amateur to do this. Harold Hilton’s story is just as impressive, winning the British Open twice in 1882 and 1897 at Hoylake. In additon he won the British Amateur four times and the US Amateur once, in 1911.
