Rye Golf Club

Anticipated Links Experience:
Links experience with a big HEART. Rye is a private members’ club with only 2-balls and foursomes acceptable.  A luncheon is served either before or after play in the small dining room. Rye is like your own living room – genial, warm, and full of love for links golf. A traditional club where you enjoy every step around the course and the clubhouse.

Best hole:
par3: 7th hole
par4: 4th hole
par5: 1st hole

Worthy of note:
Try out Charles Darwin’s chair in the Darwin Room after having consumed a classic cold luncheon in jacket and tie.

History:
In 1893 it was decided to form a club and in 1894 the first tournament was held on Camber’s sand dunes. Harry S Colt became secretary in 1895 and designed today’s lay-out, which proved to be the start of his brilliant career as a course architect. In 1911 there were 490 members, of whom 60 were women, and the classic cold luncheon became standard fare. In January 1920 the Oxford and Cambridge Golfing Society played its first match – now referred to as the President’s Putter. During WW2 defence emplacements were built on the first nine holes and in 1944 the clubhouse was badly damaged in a bombing raid. Two years later the club was on its feet again with clubhouse and President’s Putter in good old reliable form. In 1977 the Jubilee Course was opened consisting today of 11 holes. The club has had only three greenkeepers in 100 years! Bernard Darwin was club captain in 1906 and 1956.
