Trevose Golf & Country Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
A holiday links Country Club, where a number of holes retain links character but mostly holes are very broad, forgiving and some distance from the classic love we seek.
Best holes:
par3: 11th hole
par4: 7th hole
par5: 4th hole
Worthy of note:
The 4th hole’s backdrop with Trevose Head in the background is perrhaps one of the most famous golfing images outside the major championships. If you have a surfboard in your garage – take it.
History:
The land on which the course lies has had historic significance for hundreds of years. It was this fact that attracted Dr Penrose Williams, an amateur archaeologist. He bought a summer house at Constantine Bay at the beginning of the 1900s. He had heard it said that there was a “Holy Well” hidden in the area, and after thorough investigation he dug it out in 1911.
Unfortunately he was forced to fill in his excavations and it was not until he bought the land in 1920 that he could once again dig out the well. Today it is possible to visit “Holy Well” that has been reconstructed next to St. Constantine’s Church next to the Short Course. Dr.Williams was left wondering what to do with the remaining property so he contacted Harry S. Colt, who designed the golf course which opened in 1925. Since 1955 the club has remained in the Gammon-family’s ownership.
