West Lancashire Golf Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
A traditional links course. The only thing that doesn’t fit in is possibly the clubhouse, which is a little like the one at Ljunghusen Golf Club. The sea is a constant companion during the first nine holes and the course is relatively flat. Over the last nine, you encounter from the 12th in a number of holes that follow different terrain – sand dune links.
Best Holes:
par3: 12th
par4: 13th
par5: 16th
Worthy of Note:
On the 6th June, 1972, Peter Richard Parkinson made Great Britain’s longest hole-in-one – on a par 4, 393 yards!
History:
One of England’s 10 oldest clubs, established in 1873. The club is one of the 24 that contributed money towards the commissioning of the British Amateur trophy.
In 1901, Harold Hilton was secretary at the club, the same year he won the British Amateur. It is not known who originally laid out the course, but during the 1960s C K Cotton designed the existing lay-out.
The course is often used as a tournament course with the Brabazon Tropy and final qualifiers for the British Open being played here.
