George Duncan

British Open has been played since 1860 in 14 different courses. Twice at Royal Cinque Ports, 1909 and 1920. It has also been forced to move from Deal 3 times, meaning you have actually cancelled the championship more times than you have arranged it.

1920 Abe Mitchell led after the initial 36 holes with 6 strokes. This after an excellent 74,73. Further down the field was George Duncan, who started with 80,80 and was 13 strokes behind. In desperation,  Duncan decided that on completion of  second round purchase a new driver on the local exhibition for golf equipment. With this new tool he mastered Deal, ends magnificently with 71,72 to win. The turnaround is the greatest in British Open history of a winner. Duncan continued his career to play for Britain in the Ryder Cup 1927, 1929 and 1931.
