Tralee Golf Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
A modern links that is superior to most when it concerns natural experiences, or as Palmer said, “I designed the first nine, but surely God designed the back nine.” The last nine holes can take the breath away from the most hardened player. It can be experienced as a little too much but has a number of holes that are extremely demanding. The front nine begin strongly but there are some holes that are unexpectedly bland and not particularly inspiring.
Best Holes:
par3: Third
par4: 12th
par5: Second
Worthy of Note:
Historical references abound. On the beach alongside the 2nd hole the 1968 Oscar winner, “Ryan’s Daughter”, was filmed, while on the beach alongside the 15th tee the traitor Roger Casement stepped ashore from a German u-boat in 1916 only to be captured and hanged.
History:
Tralee Golf Club opened its Arnold Palmer-designed course at Barrow in October 1984, after moving from its 9-hole course at Mounthawk near Tralee.
The club had already opened its first 9-hole course in 1896. One year later a further nine holes were added.
In 1920 Captain Lionel Hewson was hired to design a new course at Oakpark, Tralee. He wrote how he was threatened by locals who didn’t appreciate his work. He was proven right to be on his guard as Major McKinnon was shot to death while playing on the course in 1921.
