We begin with True Links. Leasowe – neighbour to Wallasay. Already at 11 am, the first members begin to register scores from the day’s round. We seek good advice – “Keep away from the rough”. Advice that proves to be more accurate than expected. The bartender tells us that it has been raining for months and pours an ale. On the noticeboard we are instructed to fill in an incident report if we hit over the road and into private property on holes 13 and 14.
The Fear from Borth comes creeping. From our lunch table we can see the entire course – or so we think. However, behind the 1st green there is a wall with an entrance from Alice in Wonderland and suddenly we find three more holes. The 2nd – a short par 4, the 3rd – a difficult par 3, and the 4th – a 400-yards par 4, lead us back to the wall. Back again we are confronted with a par 5 with a fairway as wide as a red carpet with jungle-thick elephant grass a yards alongside. We have to search for the balls of others so that we don’t need a big replacement order when we get back to the shop. Something eats balls just off the fairway. The man behind us ends up on the wrong side of the wall and is forced to use supernatural reflexes when his attempt to get back into Wonderland canons off the wall and fires the ball far, far away in the opposite direction. We continue along the protective wall towards the sea. The 6th to the 9th holes are pleasant par 4s of high links class. Then the fun stops. The fairways lie like dominos next to each other until you meet out of bounds alongside the town. We practice links shots and swear at the ever-hungry, ball-eating rough. On the 17th things get serious. All of 500 yards. Headwind. We have still not completed our training. The course smirks. Nevertheless we finish in the best possible fashion with par on the classic links finishing par 3, with the clubhouse in the background.
