Cruden Bay Golf Club

Anticipated Links Experience:
One of the true links experiences. Raw, scraggy holes that stimulate all the senses. Its location is the defining point between land and sea. From the clubhouse you step out, quite literally, into another environment – neither the sea nor land. There are many unique holes with historical connections, which make the course a fantastic backwards look through time. One of the courses all links lovers should play – a model links course.

Best Holes:
par 3 – 6th hole
par 4 – 5th hole
par 5 – 6th hole

Worthy of Note:
The 19th hole is a par 3 straight out towards the sea that is used when another hole is closed, and perhaps the best of them all. Step forward and play! – memories of the 7th hole at Pebble Beach. Enjoy the 14th green, which drops one floor into the links landscape. The 15th is perhaps the strangest and most wonderful par 3 – a dogleg left!
The Norwegian aviator Tryggve Gran became the first to cross the North Sea by air in 1914 and took off for Norway from the beach below the course.

History:

GNSR – The Great North of Scotland Railway – inaugurated its line to Boddam in 1897 and as a result the Cruden Bay Hotel and golf course came into existence. The original design was drawn up by Old Tom Morris. In 1926 the final lay-out was completed by Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler. Many of Tom Morris’ original greens and course stretches are, however, still in use today.

Cruden Bay was promoted as the Brighton of the North but failed to achieve the same success. The railway line was closed in 1932 and in 1939 the hotel became a hospital for the duration of WWII and was thereafter torn down in 1947.  Today the clubhouse stands on the same site – historical ground.
