Nairn Golf Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
A tough, classic links test where the opening 7 holes follow the Moray Firth. A course of championship character, where the back tees create tough challenges in a slight breeze. Incredibly beautiful and inspiring scenery that greatly adds to links devotion of the strongest sort.
When James Braid played the course over 80 years ago, he summarised his experience thus: “The texture of the turf and character of the greens is unrivalled.” True even today.
Best Holes:
par 3 – 6th hole
par 4 – 5th hole
par 5 – 6th hole
Worthy of Note:
Viscount Whitelaw, Margaret Thatcher’s Deputy Prime Minister, taught himself to play here.
History:
Founded in 1887 by Robert Finlay, who later became a highly ranked politician in London and recruited his eminent friends to become members. At the same time he brought Old Tom Morris there to develop the course. Twenty years later it was James Braid’s turn to change the tees, bunkers and greens, while at the same time becoming the first player to score under 70 in 1901. In 1920 Ben Sayer designed a number of new holes. James Braid contributed with his assistance and expertise once again.
The course has been consistently used for many championship tournaments. In 1999 the Walker Cup was held here, as was the Curtis Cup in 2012.
