Three Sweaters at Royal Cinque Ports

It’s a three-sweater day,” say the members in the locker room. “Are you a member? You should be!”
It is 2+, wrong wind direction and the premier for 2013. Why aren’t LINKS75 members? Winter clothing on – but the sun is out. There is headwind for the first nine holes – unusual. We discuss improvements ahead of the British Amateur in May. From the 2nd and onward keep the stance low and flight the balls under the wind. On the 2nd hole we score our first links par for the year.  The 3rd offers up a birdie. Links delight! On the 4th the sea makes it felt – a huge saltwater hazard edging the slope in front of the green. We struggle on in fantastic conditions for this time of year. The 4-ball ahead spreads out across the playing field. After the 9th they disappear for a warming toddy in the half-way house – we are northerners. A new back tee at the 10th. On the 11th – newly sodded bunkers – wonderful.

More of the bunkers have got a face-lift and the course has risen in our esteem. The last nine, which normally is one of the hardest closing stretches on the LINKS75 circuit, are forced to retreat in a tailwind. We drive further than normal and the course offers little resistance. The 16th has a majestic bunker to the right of the rise in front of the green. LINKS75 Junior hits a pitch and sinks the resulting birdie putt – touché! On the 17th work is well under way to sod both bunkers in front of the green and raise those to the left to an equivalent level – perhaps a coming photogenic LINKS75 jewel. We head down the 18th, shake hands and wander off to a waiting warming shower. Please make us members immediately.
