Formby
Anticipated Golf Experience:
Wake up in the clubhouse’s Dormy. Go down through history’s corridor to breakfast in the Dining Room, and a view over the 18th hole and large sections of Formby Ladies course. At Formby its easy to feel content – a quite wonderful environment. Out on the course we allowed stunted pine groves and knee-high grass to lead the way through the landscape. At the 10th we stopped and looked out towards the sea and were stunned by the enormous power that washed away two magnificent golf holes. At the 18th tee the clubhouse warmly awaits, next to the closing green and bunker placements in LINKS75-class. A LINKS75 model course with its history and special character resting warmly in our hearts.
Best holes:
par3: 10th hole
par4: 15th hole
par5: 17th hole
Worthy of Note:
Check out “the Hippo” in the clubhouse. It was donated to the club in 1909 by the widow of Mr E Storey. The hippo has been on view in the clubhouse ever since, with the exception of a very funny story that occurred during WW11. The background to this episode can be read on the wall next to the hippo as well as in Göran Zachrisson’s wonderful book, “20 berättelser om golf”. Enjoy the fantastic snooker room on the second floor.
History:
The club has a long history that stretches back to 1884 when the club was founded. Bernard Darwin already in 1910 wrote of the course’s excellence. Major changes took place under the supervision of James Braid in 1922, among others the lay-out of holes 15 to 18. As a result of erosion it was necessary during the 1970s to abandon the holes nearest the coast and three new ones were built. The assignment was given to Donald Steel, who added the 7th, 8th and 9th holes and the 10th was shortened by one stroke and made into a par 3. The new stretch of holes had its premier in the beginning of the 1980s.
Many important amateur tournaments have been played at Formby, such as four British Amateurs and three Brabham Trophies. In 2013 Formby is one of three qualifying courses for the Senior British Open at Royal Birkdale.
