Hillside Golf Club

Anticipated Links Experience:
A memorable experience can be anticipated at Southport’s Triumvirate – Hillside, S&A andd Birkdale. A very good links experience that offers both a classic links opening and a more modern last nine, which can be seen as being both heavenly and a little too much, even if Greg Norman described the last 9 as the best in the British Isles. A championship links course.

Best Holes:
par3: 10th hole
par4: 13th hole
par5: 11th hole

Worthy of Note:
Make sure you have something to give you strength at the halfway house as both the 10th and 11th holes engender love of the stongest sort. Climb up on the sand dunes to the left of the 18th tee and look out over Royal Birkdale – amazing and very photogenic.

History:
The course has undergone great changess since the club was formed in 1911. During the 1960s surplus land was bought from Royal Birkdale. Fred Hawtree was hired as the architect, who designed nine new finishing holes and re-built most of the existing first nine holes.
The course has been host for the British Amateur, the last time being 2011. Hillside is even regularly used as a final qualifying course for the British Open, and will be used as such until 2016.
