Royal St Georges Golf Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
One of the great links experiences. Whether it be checking in at the shop, getting changed in the fantastic locker room, drinking coffee in the smoking room, teeing up by the starting shed, or finishing your round, you are always aware of a warm sensation of never-ending love. Treat yourself to perhaps the best combination of 18 links holes that you will find. Worth a trip on its own – over and over again.
Best Holes:
par3: 16th
par4: 8th
par5: 13th
Worthy of Note:
The course’s third hole is the only par 3 hole on the British Open circuit without bunkers. Step down and have a practice swing in the bunker at the 4th hole. Reserve lunch – jacket and tie
History:
The course was designed by William Laidlaw Purves in 1887, and already in 1892 John Ball from Hoylake won the British Amateur title here. Since then many important tournaments have been decided at Sandwich. Nine British Opens were played at Royal St Georges up until 1949, but it took another 30 years before the Open returned. The main criticism was that the course was unbalanced as the first nine holes were 500 yards shorter than the last nine. The course was thereafter modified to allow the Open to return. The last time was in 2011 when Darren Clarke was victorious.
