Southport & Ainsdale Golf Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
Links golf at its best. Sand dunes, gorse, sleeper-lined bunkers and knee-high grass. Challenging stretches which are both well-manicured and demand finesse. a wonderful links course with a big heart. From the clubhouse terrace you have a complete view of the 1st hole – a par 3- and the greater part of the 18th, a par 4. A links course that arouses a lot of love – part of the triumvirate – S&A, Hillside and Birkdale.
Best hole:
par3: 1st hole
par4: 12th hole
par5: 16th hole
Worthy of note:
Take a long drink in the Ryder Bar and soak in the historical vibes from 1933 and 1937. The 8th and 16th holes have now and then been named among the 500 best golf holes in the world.
History:
Like so many other British courses, even S&A has been laid out by James Braid, of which 15 holes still remain in the current course layout. The course has been host over the years for many important championships, the Ryder Cup (1933 & 1937), the Open Final Qualification and the British Amateur. In one of the single matches in 1933, Abe Mitchell, personal coach to Samuel Ryder, carried out one of the greatest recoveries ever seen in modern matchplay. He was three down after 10 holes in his 36-hole match with Olin Dutra (USA). He then won 13 of the next 14 holes and won the match 9 and 8.
