Waterville Golf Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
A links experience beyond the ordinary. Every hole is an experience in itself and in its entirety the course is truly something else. A course that offers enormous links delight. A mixture of modern and classic links, where many holes seem to have been reproduced in new links creations. Awesome.
Best Holes:
par3: 12th
par4: 16th
par5: 18th
Worthy of Note:
Payne Stewart’s statue stands outside the clubhouse. He had just accepted the position of Club Captain when he died in a plane crash.
Make sure to stay at Waterville House, which is almost as great an experience as the golf course itself.
History:
The course began as a modest 9-holer when telephone cables began to be laid under the Atlantic to the USA and the workers needed something to occupy themselves during their spare time. In the 1950s new technology arrived and the course proceeded to live an undistinguished existence until the 1960s when John A Mulcahy, an Irish-born American, had the idea to create the most challenging links course in the world. To achieve this he recruited one of Ireland’s most famous links architects, Eddie Hacket. The old nine holes were used as the front nine and in 1973 the new course was opened as well as the clubhouse. In 2002 a further decision was made to let Tom Fazio carefully renovate the course to become what it is today.
