After a few wrong turns in Liverpool we are met by a warm welcome in the reception. A light meal and it is of to the first tee. The old horsetrack lies right in front of us. With a little bit of wind the teeshot might feel a bit “dangerous” out to the right and the clubhouse to the left. The starter has however a good piece of advice, “striaght forward 235 yards!”. Easy, and we followed it!
Hoylake is the second oldest linkscourse in England only beaten by Westward Ho! in Devon. Two famous members of Hoylake is John Ball and Harold Hilton. Those two prominent amateur golfers in the late 19th and early 20th century. After having played the five first relatively flat holes the rain starts pouring down. On the 9th hole “Punchbowl” we see the sea for the first time. A nice hole with the green placed in the middle of the “pits”. 10 and 12 are both dog leg left and are quite similair. As long as you avoid the bunkers from tee it is smooth sailing on them. The short 11th hole “Alps” is a real wonder
The conclusion is the real deal. 14th is something to remember, 15 and 17 are two magnificent par fours. The new green at the 17th makes it a lot more interessting. At the 16th hole Roberto de Vicenzo closed the Open 1967 with a spoon over the wall and onto the green.
The rain has ceased, the sun is comming fourth and Links75 is moving forward with a smile.Royal Liverpool is a club you want to return to.
