Royal Aberdeen Golf Club
Anticipated Links Experience:
A classic championship links course of major proportions. Fantastic turf, bunkers and greens. Incredibly intense links delight. Very challenging even when the rough has been cut. A number of the holes leave you wanting more. The clubhouse lies at the same level as the first tee and provides an amazing view over enchanting landscape. A must!
Best Holes:
par 3 -14th hole
par 4 – 15th hole
par 5 – 2nd hole
Worthy of Note:
The course follows more or less alongside Murcar golf course before it turns. There is a story of a twosome that continued onto Murcar quite unintentionally and played the 18th hole before finally walking into the wrong clubhouse.
History:
The 6th oldest golf club in the world, founded in 1780. It was granted royal status in 1903. Originally it was played on “common land” between the rivers Don and Dee. However, during the second half of the 1800s land was bought north of the Don and it is at Balgownie where the course lies today. The original design was drawn up by Archie and Robert Simpson from Carnoustie and later upgraded by James Braid. In the year 2000 further improvements were added by Donald Steel and Martin Hawtree.
Many championships have been held here. In 2005 the Senior British Open was won here by Tom Watson, and more recently in 2011 the Walker Cup was held here. The Scottish Open will take place here in 2014.
