Sun over Royal Cinque Ports

The magnificent white clubhouse shines in all its glory this early morning.

Clear blue skies and high fresh air. The first time we get the advice is at lunch at Littlestone: “Be sure to have a cushion before the last nine holes.” The last nine measures 390 yards longer than the first nine. From 12th onwards, it’s always headwind. Our expectations are exceeded after only a few holes. Third a long par 4 with a green like a skateboardbowl 380 yards away.

Fourth a par three that requires a perfect teeshot to avoid the hollow behind the green. We reach the 8th, a par 3 with six guarding pot bunkers surrounding the front half of the green. Teeshot straight towards the sea. A par 3 of absolute worldclass.

After 11th, we encounter the wind and the length of the holes suddenly increases significantly. A bag with 10 clubs is not enough. The driver is picked out but eagerly awaited. Once at the 12th green we are greeted by a green surface that can most easily be compared to a half pipe. Holes 13 through 18 are extremely tough. “The Cushion” we built the first nine is soon gone. The approach shots passes from sevenirons to fourirons. Fairway undulates even more. Mr. L wins with 2/0.

A course worth travelling to
