Pyle & Kenfig Golf Club

Anticipated Links Experience:
A links course, known locally as P&K, of two quite distinct characters. The first nine, which are on the same side as the clubhouse, are flat and relatively characterless, except for the 4th – a par 3 and the 7th – a par 4. These were designed by Harry S Colt. After crossing the road and holing out at the 11th, there are three incredibly good golf holes, from the 12th to 14th, which were designed by Mackenzie Ross. Unfortunately these three holes don’t quite make up for the rest. Despite this the course has been host to a number of important tournaments.

Best Holes:
par3: 12th
par4: 13th
par5: 11th

Worthy of Note:
The main attraction is the variety of views one gets over the Bristol Channel, Gower Peninsula and the Welsh Mountains.

History:
The club was founded in 1919 and the course opened in 1922. By 1925 there were 18 holes, although in a completely different lay-out than today. In 1926 Harry S Colt discovered the course and changed it. The first nine holes are more or less intact. In 1939 the British Army requisitioned the course and as late as 1996 an old landmine was found while doing maintenance on the 16th fairway! The club received significant compensation from the army and could, in 1947, hire Mackenzie Ross to desgn holes 11 to 15. In later years the 18th hole has been changed to avoid problems with run-away balls on the bisecting road.
The club, together with Royal Porthcawl, has been host for the Amateur Championship twice, one of which was won by a Swede – Kricken Härdin.
