Royal Porthcawl Golf Club

Anticipated Links Experience:
A model links course – “classic” doesn’t do it justice. Not as well-known as its royal cousins – but Oh so good! It is also a championship course and if you play from the back tees it can be extremely difficult. The opening four holes are fantastic, with the 2nd being an absolute monster in the slighest breeze. Must be played by anyone wanting to complete their portfolio of links experiences. On every hole the sea catches the eye. Our recommdedation is that you stay at the club’s dormy and reserve lunch between rounds. A must – pure, unadulterated links delight.

Best Holes:
par3: 14th
par4: Second
par5: 5th

Worthy of Note:
The inner bar with the sea as your only neighbour.

History:
The club was formed in 1891. In the beginning there were two 9-hole courses in different locations, but in 1895 more land was bought at the existing site and with the help of Ramsay Hunter, a Scottish greenkeeper who had previously laid out Royal St Georges, the course was extended to 18 holes. In 1909 it received its royal status, one of only two granted in Wales. The R&A visited the course in 1933 to see if it should be added to the Open circuit, but a great number of changes were demanded. Although these were carried out, WWII broke out just when the course was ready and it was taken over by the militiary. It was not until 1950 that the first, big championship, the British Amateur, was held here. Since then it has played host to a large number of tournaments, such as British Amateurs,  the Walker Cup and the Curtis Cup. A number of great players including Tiger Woods, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman and Sandy Lyle, have fought for victory on this course.
It will be the first Welsh course to arrange the British Senior Open in 2014.
