Royal Cinque Ports Golf Club (Deal)
Anticipated Links Experience:
A championship course. Classic 9 out – 9 in lay-out. An extremely good links course – demanding and difficult to score well. The last nine holes are collectively 390 yards longer from the yellow tee. The course is laid out behind a protective embankment that separates you from the English Channel. Should be played from August onwards as it is a course that gets better in the winter. A links experience you can never get enough of.
Best Holes:
par3: 8th
par4: 17th
par5: 16th
Worthy of Note:
A remarkably beautiful, grand clubhouse. Apart from the bar and dining room (jacket and tie) you should definitely visit the Locker Room, which has fantastic showers as big as in a standard hotel room. There is also, somewhat unusually, a half-way house.
History:
Royal Cinque Ports was founded in 1892, but the course suffered badly during both world wars. James Braid was responsible for renovations after WWI and Sir Guy Campbell the same after WWII.
The course has played host to the British Open twice, in 1909 and 1920. It was intended that the tournament would be held here in 1915, 1938 and 1948 but was unfortunately hindered by world war and flooding.
From 2014 to 2017 the course will be used as a final qualifying course when the British Open is held at Royal St Georges. In 2013 it will be host to the British Amateur.
